As part of the Resource Positive Envelope Design project, two international speakers were connected via videoconference to discuss their cutting edge work in architecture and design. Dr Rachel Armstrong is a writer, multimedia producer, television presenter, arts collaborator and general medical practitioner specializing in non-Darwinian techniques of evolution and the challenges of the extra-terrestrial environment. She is a Teaching Fellow at the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London and member of Professor Neil Spiller's AVATAR Research Group, developing a new architectural methodology called Systems Architecture, which is the study of complexity within the discipline of the built environment that enables the convergence of the nano-bio-info-cogno technologies and extends from the macroscale flow of information to the micro scale organization of building materials. Philip Beesley is one of Canada's most innovative architects. His work combines active practice, experiment, research and publication in public architecture, stage and exhibition design, book design and sculpture. He is a past recipient of Canada's highest award for architecture, the Prix de Rome and he is the Director of Waterloo Architecture's Integrated Group for Visualization, Design and Architecture. Most recently, he was chosen to represent Canada at the 2010 Venice Biennale in Architecture, the world's most prestigious architectural exhibition. |
