Green Building Exchange 2010
Seoul & Beijing

The Green Building Exchange 2010 builds on the success of the 2008 Green Building Exchange and provides a new occasion to bring our top experts in green buildings to China and South Korea to develop further partnerships in sustainable design and share Canadian expertise in this critical area. The 2008 exchange was invaluable in connecting to organizations such as the Beijing Institute for Architectural Design and Samsung Construction and has led to ongoing projects for a number of the participants. This year's event will leverage those partnerships to create further opportunities.

This year's delegation included some of Canada's top architects, engineers, researchers, educators as well as a selection of cutting edge building products that are redefining sustainability.

The exchange is conducted in conjunction with the Resource Positive Envelope Design project which is part of Canada's contribution to the Asia Pacific Partnership (APP) on Clean Development and Climate. It builds on existing domestic and international agreements between all APP countries to share research on building envelope design (including walls, roofs and foundations) and envelope design will be the theme of the 2010 exchange.

The program will consist of keynote presentations, panel discussions and opportunities for one on one meetings between Canadian practitioners, researchers and industry leaders and their Chinese and Korean counterparts.

Focus and Purpose

The focus of this program is on next generation building envelope design and its purpose will be to promote and share Canada's experience in these areas but also to build and renew partnerships with appropriate organizations in China and Korea. Topics covered include curriculum development, metering and monitoring, innovative materials, new assemblies (such as cross laminated timber), and the integration of renewable energy sources with the fabric of the building.

Objectives

1. To develop partnerships between Canada's architects, designers and engineers and their Chinese and Korean counterparts
2. To explore market partnerships in China and South Korea for eco-friendly Canadian building products in the construction industry such as sunlight collection and distribution systems, wood products and stationary fuel cells
3. To develop joint research between Canadian and Chinese and Korean institutions in the area of envelope design
4. To promote education, professional development and awareness in the field of sustainability and green buildings

Audience

1. Design professionals (such as architects, engineers and planners)
2. Developers and contractors
3. Students and educators (with an emphasis on senior faculty, graduate students and research groups)
4. Government agencies (including planning departments)
